Conn. Gov. Ned Lamont at a news conference at the UConn Graduate Business Learning Center touting the economic impact of the university, Tuesday in Hartford.

The University of Connecticut generates $5.3 billion a year in economic activity in the state. That’s according to an analysis just released by the school.

Governor Ned Lamont says the study highlights the importance of UConn to the state economy, especially producing engineers for the state’s aerospace, defense and advanced manufacturing industry.

“And secondly when you look at the future of where our state is, it’s in life sciences and bioscience, and there again UConn is taking the lead.”

UConn President Thomas Katsouleas says it’s important for Connecticut to maintain a state-funded flagship research university “to ensure that the talent that develops in the state of Connecticut has an opportunity to pursue its educational goals here and stays here.”

According to the analysis $3 billion is generated directly from UConn, $914 million from related industries and $1.4 billion from research, jobs and clinical care provided by the university.

Lamont and Katsouleas spoke at the launch of an interactive website that demonstrates UConn’s reach in the state’s 169 cities and towns.
