Suffolk County health officials have stepped up their battle against ticks with a new public awareness campaign.

The new program aims to reduce Suffolk’s high numbers of tickborne diseases through public education.

Outreach programs at summer camps and libraries will teach residents how to protect against ticks and how to respond to bites. Tick information will also be available through a new 311 phone line.

The outreach effort comes as a rare tick-related pathogen called Powassan virus was discovered in Suffolk ticks.
