Portraits in Song: Music in the World of August Sander

Portraits in Song: Music in the World of August Sander

From country villages to city cafés, from folk melodies to modernist brilliance, this performance captures the sounds that shaped German society in the early 20th century. The compositions of Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Paul Hindemith, and Kurt Weill—along with timeless folk and cabaret songs—illuminate the humor, hope, and humanity of a changing age. Presented by students, graduates, and faculty at the Yale School of Music.

Offered in conjunction with the exhibition August Sander’s People of the 20th Century. Exhibition made possible by the Carolyn and George R. Rowland Foundation; the Joann and Gifford Phillips, Class of 1942, Fund; and the Wolfe Family Exhibition and Publication Fund. Program generously sponsored by the Martin A. Ryerson Lectureship Fund.
