On this date in 1501, Michelangelo received the commission for his iconic sculpture of David. 1501 was also the year that Venetian printer Ottaviano Petrucci published his Harmonice Musices Odhecaton. It was the first book of polyphonic music printed using the new technology of movable type. Today's Beautiful Music features some of those 96 pieces that illustrated the technique.

Suzanne Bona is the host and executive producer of Sunday Baroque, a nationally syndicated weekly radio show of Baroque and early music which she originated on WSHU in 1987.
