U.S. Coast Guard swabs march in formation at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn.

The U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London has reported its first COVID-19 case.

Rear Admiral Bill Kelly, superintendent of the Academy, said in a video to cadets and staff that the affected cadet is a 20-year old from Florida who had been travelling in Europe recently.

“He went on spring break to Spain with six other classmates and a couple of friends. One of the friends has tested positive as well. The six classmates are not exhibiting any signs right now, and they are all at home resting and quarantined, as well self-monitoring.”

Around 1,000 cadets are currently on spring break and were due to return to the Academy on March 29.

Kelly says a new return date will be announced next week. There are currently 65 cadets and staff who are self-monitoring.
