As colder weather has advanced, cases of coronavirus and variants have soared, including in our region. At the same time, COVID-19 vaccine and booster shot rates climb. Data shows there have been 10,010 deaths in the state linked to COVID-19, the 29th highest overall death count in the country.

Connecticut hospitals are at about 80% bed capacity with 16% of the beds occupied by coronavirus patients. The state is down to averaging about 160 new coronavirus patients per week.

Connecticut continues to see fewer COVID-19 cases, reaching an 11.4% test positivity rate – the lowest since late December. New York’s infections are down about 46% from the previous week’s tally of cases.

Ending the mask mandate in the middle of a school year is not a good idea, even if infection rates go down, said superintendent Michael Testani of Bridgeport.
