On May 17, 1954, the United States Supreme Court unanimously ruled that racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional. Yet, in 1957, three years later, public schools in Little Rock, Arkansas, were still segregated. That is, until September 25, 1957, when members of the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army escorted nine black kids into Central High School in Little Rock. Those black kids became known as “The Little Rock Nine." Carlotta Walls LaNier was the youngest member of the Nine, only fourteen years old in September of 1957.
