Sanders Drops Out, But His Name Remains On Connecticut Ballot

There will still be a presidential primary in Connecticut on June 2, despite announcements by U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders Wednesday, and other candidates before him, that they’ve suspended their campaigns.

Secretary of the State Denise Merrill says even though Sanders has suspended his campaign, he and several other candidates, including a Republican challenger to President Donald Trump, have yet to officially remove their names from Connecticut’s presidential primary ballot.

“I hope these candidates would reconsider wanting to be on our ballot and wanting us to have a primary. Especially now when we have a pandemic, where people are literally dying and we need to protect the public.”

Merrill says it doesn’t make sense to put the health and safety of voters and poll workers at risk.

In the meantime, she says she’ll continue to work with local election officials to prepare in any event. And she advises Connecticut voters to apply for absentee ballots if they are concerned about going to the polls on June 2.
