The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers has honored the Stony Brook scientist whose work led to the development of the MRI, declaring his work a “historical milestone.”

A plaque honoring the late Paul Lauterbur will be on display at the Stony Brook Medical Research and Translation building.

According to his daughter Elise, Lauterbur had his eureka moment while chewing on a hamburger at a Pittsburgh Big Boy restaurant.

Stony Brook University will reach out to its neighbors tomorrow afternoon when it hosts its first “Comm-University” Day.

Joan Dickinson, Director of Community Affairs, says residents don’t realize that Stony Brook has an “open” campus, and that they are more than welcome not only to cultural and sports events, but also to use the resources of the various schools.

“Being a good neighbor is very important to Stony Brook University. An event like this gives us a chance to interact with our neighbors.”

A new study by the Clean Water Partnership finds that toxic algal blooms were discovered in every major bay and estuary across Long Island: 15 lakes and 20 beaches. This is the longest and most intense brown tide in Long Island’s recorded history.
