The Metropolitan Transportation Authority will start to increase service, as Long Island and parts of the Hudson Valley enter phase one of reopening.

Ridership on the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North plummeted in March due to COVID-19. The LIRR saw a 97% decline and Metro-North, a 94% decline. Fewer trains are running on both services.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority will reduce service on Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North due to coronavirus concerns. Ridership has dropped more than 90% on the commuter rails.

Under the “essential service” plan, service on the LIRR would be cut by 35%. Metro-North will run hourly service on the Harlem, Hudson and New Haven lines.

New schedules go into effect Friday.
