On Long Island, 33 organizations that help the homeless have received an early Christmas present thanks to U.S. Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand of New York.

Federal officials say Long Island has eliminated chronic homelessness among veterans. That means there is a system in place to permanently house all known and future homeless veterans.

Some homeless advocates are dismayed by what they say is Governor Andrew Cuomo’s failure at the end of the legislative session to follow through with promises to fund five years’ worth of new supportive housing and other services for the homeless. Their complaints come as the state comptroller issued a scathing report on the state of homeless shelters across New York.

With the legislative session down to the wire, groups for and against bills, including expansion of Uber ride services and ethics reform, came to the Capitol to make their voices heard. The hallways were filled with noisy with protesters, advocates and even groups of schoolchildren on field trips.
