Gareth Coker

As the creators of Minecraft continue to expand deeper into the realms of mythology, composer Gareth Coker continues to add to his repertoire of exotic instruments and music of heroic times. His two recent soundtracks, for Norse and Egyptian Mythologies, gave him the opportunity to work with some incredible world instrumentalists. As he told me, it was the stories of the gods that provided much of the inspiration for his music.

Every game composer I've talked with has so much respect for the musicians who bring their music to life on the soundtracks.

Gareth Coker's massive soundtrack for ARK: Survival Evolved is as huge as the dinosaurs you can train and battle! As he told me, developing the music while the game was in early access provided all kinds of unexpected challenges.

Gareth Coker describes The Unspoken from Insomniac Games, as "Fight Club for Wizards!" This unique virtual reality game gives players a chance to battle each other using incredibly powerful spells. Gareth says he spend weeks experimenting to get just the right palette for the soundtrack, then found the perfect musicians to perform it.

Gareth Coker says that when Microsoft asked if he'd like to write the score for two new Minecraft expansions, he took "about half a second" to say yes! I talked with him at MAGFest about his soundtracks for Minecraft:  Greek Mythology and Minecraft: Chinese Mythology. Gareth had years to write his beloved score for Ori and the Blind Forest, but as he explained, he wrote both new scores in about a month.
