Suozzi Trails In Race For L.I. Congressional District

Nov 5, 2020

Democratic U.S. Representative Tom Suozzi has called for patience to allow for absentee ballots to be counted, as he trails behind his Republican challenger George Santos in a tight race for New York’s 3rd Congressional District.

Santos is ahead by 4,000 votes. Suozzi says he’s not finished yet.

“So they actually don’t start counting the absentee ballots until next Monday," Suozzi says there are about 90,000 absentee ballots, "with the percentage of Democrats, the percentage of Republicans, the history of doing this kind of stuff, that I am going to win by over 20,000 votes.”

Suozzi seeks to secure his third term representing western North Shore, Long Island. He was assigned onto the House Ways and Means Committee in 2018, and was Nassau County Executive prior to Congress.

Santos describes himself as a “next-generation Republican.” He’s a New York City financial investor and a political newcomer. Santos would be the first openly gay Republican to serve in New York's congressional delegation.
