Among this week’s Emmy nominees is a PSA from Sandy Hook Promise. The advocacy group was formed in the aftermath of the 2012 Newtown school shooting.
The spot is called "Point of View." It’s told from the point of view of a school shooter, and it shows them experience isolation and bullying.
Sandy Hook Promise says those are common warning signs before a school shooting. The group offers training at schools to help students recognize those signs.
“Sandy Hook Promise has developed quite a reputation over the last few years for creating compelling commercials and PSAs that really educate people and making them think differently. And I think our 'Point of View' commercial achieved that again by making people look at life in school from a very different perspective,” said Nicole Hockley who is with the group.
The spot, produced by the ad agency BBDO New York, was nominated for Outstanding Commercial.
Sandy Hook Promise has released five PSAs since 2016 on the warning signs of gun violence. The first one, 'Evan,' received more than 11 million views on YouTube.
Hockley says the group plants to release another PSA this year.
