Name Of Man Released In Waterbury Police Shooting

Jan 22, 2020

Connecticut State Police have identified the man killed by Waterbury police this week as Edward Hendron.

Authorities will investigate whether Officer Ronald Tompkins III was right to use deadly force.

Hendron is the third person killed in an officer-involved shooting so far this year in Connecticut.

Officers killed the man while they were checking out reports of a bullet shot through a wall between two homes.

David McGuire of the ACLU of Connecticut says the trend is troubling.

“This is the third police killing in less than three weeks here in Connecticut. It’s really a pandemic here in the state. It’s an issue that really needs to be taken head-on. We need very, very large structural change to prevent these police killings.”

Last week police shot and killed a 19-year-old man after a high-speed chase on Interstate 95. Body camera footage of that shooting showed an officer fire at the man several times through a car window.

Police in Waterbury weren’t wearing body cameras.
