Grechen Shirley Considering A Run For King's Seat

Nov 12, 2019

Potential candidates for New York’s 2nd Congressional District have emerged, one day after U.S. Representative Peter King of Long Island announced he won’t run for reelection in 2020.

Democrat Liuba Grechen Shirley challenged Republican Peter King in 2018. She won a landmark decision that allowed her to use campaign funds for childcare. But the political newcomer narrowly lost the race on Election Day.

King won with 53% of the vote – his lowest percentage since first being elected in 1992.

His decision not to run for a 15th term adds to a growing number of Republicans not seeking reelection in 2020. With 28 years in the House, King is the longest-serving Republican in New York’s congressional delegation.

Grechen Shirley wished King well in his upcoming retirement.

She said in a statement she’s “seriously considering another run for Congress.”

If she runs again, Liuba Grechen Shirley would face educator Jackie Gordon in a June Democratic primary.
