U.S. House Representative Rosa DeLauro from Connecticut says unlicensed detention facilities for unaccompanied minors must be shut down.
DeLauro says the conditions children face while they live in these detention centers aren’t suitable for proper development. DeLauro addressed the director of the Office of Refugee Resettlement at a hearing in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday.
“The mission of the Office of Refugee Resettlement is to provide care and the expeditious placement for children with sponsors. That is what we’re trying to do. That is the agency’s job.”
DeLauro says the Department of Health and Human Services that is supposed to take care of the children are not on the same page.
A spokesperson for the Office of Refugee Resettlement says their facilities will remain open for now. Their goal is to discharge every child.
