Coronavirus Latest: Lamont Urges Safe Holiday Shopping; Cuomo Leaves Closing Schools Up To Locals

Nov 20, 2020

Here’s the latest on the coronavirus outbreak in the region:

Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont wants to build consumer confidence before the holiday shopping season. Malls and local governments rely on Black Friday shopping to boost revenues. But shopping in stores could be stymied by a surge in COVID-19 cases.

The 7-day positive COVID-19 test rate in Connecticut increased to 5.95%, according to data released by the state. 145 cities and towns in Connecticut are now under ‘red alert’. The state asks residents to postpone indoor events and restrict activity outside of their homes.

On Long Island, the 7-day positive test rate holds steady at 3.27%. The rest of New York is at 2.92%.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo says he will continue to leave it up to local health departments on whether to close down schools.

New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio closed all city schools on Thursday. Long Island officials condemned the move, saying children are safest in the classroom.
