A native Long Islander, J.D. is WSHU's assistant news director. Formerly WAMC’s Berkshire bureau chief, he has reported for public radio stations, including bylines with WSHU, WNYC, WBUR, WNPR and NPR. J.D. has reported on healthcare and small businesses for "Long Island Business News" and real estate and land-use for The Express News Group newspapers. He's an adjunct at Stony Brook University's School of Journalism. J.D. holds a B.A. in journalism and sociology from Stony Brook University and an M.S. in communications from the Newhouse School at Syracuse University.

The New York State NAACP has condemned a plan to haul garbage out of Long Island at a proposed waste transfer station in Yaphank. The push follows months of action by local NAACP chapters and environmental groups to keep the region's trash out of communities of color. Together, they will consider legal action against the town of Brookhaven and the developer.

New York gubernatorial candidate Andrew Giuliani, the son of Rudy Giuliani, held a rally outside of Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone’s office in Hauppauge on Wednesday afternoon.

Giuliani is seeking the GOP nomination to run against Democratic incumbent Andrew Cuomo.

Guiliani called for the end of all mask mandates for school students.

The state has lifted its requirement for children ages 2 to 5 to wear a face mask in day care settings.

Cuomo said schools in New York will reopen for full in-person learning in September.

Members of the Shinnecock Indian Nation rallied outside Southampton Town Hall in eastern Long Island on Tuesday night to urge the town to approve a deal to preserve sacred tribal land. The town is now poised to make a decision in June.
