Connecticut Democratic Representatives Joe Courtney and Jahana Hayes spent thousands of campaign dollars on security in the months after the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
The police chief at the U.S. Capitol told the House Appropriations Committee last month that the protection of the 535 members of Congress had grown more difficult this year since the January attack.
Since then, Hayes paid close to $4,000 in campaign funds to a company that installed a security system, according to the Federal Election Commission. A spokesperson for her campaign said it was time to invest in modest security precautions after the attack on the Capitol.
Courtney spent a similar amount on security systems in February and March, according to his campaign finance filings. The Federal Election Commission permits members to spend campaign funds on certain expenses in response to their position as a federal officeholder.
Connecticut Congresswoman Rosa Delauro, who chairs the appropriations committee, and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi are also in talks about how increased supplemental spending to address security at the Capitol.
