A COVID-19 outbreak at an assisted living facility has put North Canaan, Connecticut, on red alert. At least 41 residents and staff members at the Geer Village Senior Community have tested positive for the virus, and one has died.

CEO Kevin O’Connell said an employee who had been exposed elsewhere brought the virus into the facility. Until this outbreak, North Canaan had avoided the state’s red alert list.

The state this week brought back mandatory weekly testing for all nursing home employees. The number of employees testing positive for coronavirus across the state has more than doubled in the past two weeks. Geer Village had not been on a testing regimen for its employees because it had no previous cases.

First Selectman of North Canaan Charles Perotti says the town will remain in Phase 3 of reopening, keeping schools and restaurants open. Bridgeport, Norwalk and New Haven have reversed to Phase 2.
