Southampton Considering Underwater Pipe To Move Polluted Water

On Long Island, the town of Southampton will consider a multimillion-dollar underwater pipe that would flush polluted water out of Shinnecock Bay.

New York state had commissioned the engineering consulting firm Dewberry to recommend changes that would help remediate nitrogen pollution in the bay caused by old septic tanks.

Dewberry says an underwater pipeline in East Quogue could cost up to $50 million, but would be a quicker, cheaper fix than other options.

The firm says they could do a permanent or seasonal roadcut on the barrier island of West Hampton Dunes.

Dewberry says relying on the state’s current grant program that replaces old septic tanks, could take years to see significant changes in the bay.
