The New London Fire Department in Connecticut has been awarded a federal grant of just over $300,000 from FEMA.

U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal toured the fire department’s headquarters in downtown New London this week to see what the money is being used for.

“This grant is about their training for new equipment as well as for existing tools and techniques that they can use even better, so they’ll be even more effective in serving the people of New London and it's also about their health and safety,” Blumenthal said.

The money will help replace old hazmat equipment and provide cancer screening for the firefighters.
