It's Official: New York Says No To Sleepaway Camp

There will be no sleepaway camp this summer for children in New York. Health officials say the coronavirus is too great a threat to public safety.

New York State health commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker says he understands the role that overnight summer camps play in child development, but it’s too risky to have large groups of children in close quarters where social distance will not be enforceable.

“The health professionals within the sleepaway camp will be easily overburdened if you end up having to quarantine all those children in a camp.”

New York has had more than 200 cases of Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in children, a rare illness associated with coronavirus. Dozens of Orthodox Jewish children in Brooklyn took to the streets Friday calling for overnight summer camps to reopen.
