The Coast Guard Academy Class of 2020 celebrated its graduation – virtually – on Wednesday.
The traditional ceremony is normally held at the Academy campus in New London, Connecticut, but it was scrapped due to the pandemic.
Governor Ned Lamont was one of many well-wishers who sent messages to the nearly 250 graduates.
“I want to wish each and every one of you the very best for your graduation from the Coast Guard Academy. This may not be the graduation you expected, but it is one that you will never forget, and we will never forget the incredible duty and service you provide for your country.”
The Academy also celebrated the 40th anniversary of the first women joining the service. Female graduates of the Class of 1980 sent a message of praise.
“To the women of the Class of 2020, congratulations on your graduation. We are officers, sisters, wives, mothers, and grandmothers. We join you in commemorating the 40th anniversary of the graduation of women from the United States Coast Guard Academy.”
One hundred women graduated in the Class of 2020, making it the largest female contingent in Coast Guard history.
About 3,000 people watched the virtual ceremony.
