Long Island Man Charged With Hoarding And Price Gouging PPE

U.S. Attorney's Office - Eastern District of New York
Amardeep Singh is charged with hoarding and price-gouging personal protective equipment like face shields.

A Long Island man faces federal charges that he stockpiled hard-to-get personal protective equipment, then sold it at inflated prices.

Court documents say Amardeep Singh illegally hoarded almost six tons of surgical gowns, face masks and hand sanitizer at his warehouse in Brentwood, then sold them for excessive prices at his retail store in Plainview.

A spokesperson for the U.S. attorney’s office says Singh is the first person in the nation to be charged under the Defense Production Act during the coronavirus pandemic.

The act makes it illegal to hoard and price gouge any medical supplies designated as scarce by the federal government.

Singh could face up to a year in prison.

An attorney for Singh did not respond to a request for comment.
