COVID-19 Nursing Home Deaths Underreported, Conn. Medical Examiner Says

Some nursing homes in Connecticut aren’t reporting suspected or confirmed deaths from COVID-19, according to the state chief medical examiner.

Chief Medical Examiner James Gill says nursing homes are required to report them, and they’ve been repeatedly reminded to do so. He says his office has to find other ways to confirm COVID-19, including checking death certificates or doing their own tests.

Nursing home deaths make up about 40% of all COVID-19 deaths in Connecticut. Officials have since begun in-person checks on all nursing homes in the state.

New York has also opened an investigation into whether nursing homes violated rules on caring for COVID-19 patients.
