Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont is boosting Medicaid for the state’s nursing homes after reports that show high rates of Covid-19 in the facilities.

Lamont said expanded Medicaid payments will provide about $65 million to the state’s more than 200 nursing homes.

He said that money will go toward personal protective equipment, employee wages for things like overtime, and other Covid-19-related costs. The state will also conduct infection control surveys at all its nursing homes over the next seven to 10 days.

The state released figures last week that show high rates of transmission and death in nursing homes. Nursing home deaths make up about 40% of all Covid-19 deaths in the state.
