Suffolk County Expands Morgue Capacity

Medical personnel remove bodies from the Wyckoff Heights Medical Center last week in Brooklyn.

Suffolk County has expanded its morgue capacity in preparation for a potential surge in coronavirus-related deaths.

County Executive Steve Bellone says they’ve purchased a mobile refrigerated trailer and the state will provide a second one.

“Hopefully we will not need to use that additional capacity, of course, but it is there, and we are prepared to handle whatever comes our way.”

The Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s office has about 70% of its capacity still available.

Bellone says he communicates daily with the emergency operations center to determine morgue capacity needs.
