New York health officials say nursing homes residents who are in hospitals but don’t need to be there must be taken back to their facilities. That includes people who test positive for COVID-19.
Nassau County Health Commissioner Dr. Larry Eisenstein says he has received these new guidelines from state officials.
“Nursing homes need to know the condition that somebody's stable before they return. But nursing homes are expected to help hospitals expedite the return of patients safely to a nursing home.”
Eisenstein says nursing homes and hospitals will have to work together to make sure patients stay safe.
Some nursing home operators say they’re concerned about the new rules because discharged patients might still be contagious.
