All Long Island schools will be closed for the next two weeks in an effort to slow the spread of coronavirus.
Local government and health officials say the virus isn’t deadly for children, as far as they know, but children could become carriers and infect their family members.
Nassau County Executive Laura Curran says they are working with the school districts to make sure students in need don’t go hungry.
“Lot of our kids are dependent on school breakfasts and lunches. So we are working with our school districts to ensure that all children who qualify for reduced or free meals continue to receive them through a grab-and-go program.”
Health officials say children and adults should continue to practice social distancing to keep the virus from spreading.
New York State is also developing a plan to provide child care services for healthcare workers.
