Fans use a hand sanitizer dispenser at the entrance to Mohegan Sun Arena prior to an NCAA college basketball game on March 9.

Connecticut officials advise residents of Fairfield County with flu-like symptoms to stay home and call their doctor. This comes as health officials test for a possible cluster in Westport.

State Epidemiologist Dr. Matthew Cartter gave the advice during a Wednesday briefing on the coronavirus.

“If you have fever and a cough for example and you are in the southwestern part of the state, you should assume that you have COVID-19.”

Carter said an elderly New Canaan resident who had not traveled out of state is the third person in Connecticut to be diagnosed with COVID-19.

He said it appears to be community acquired.

Health officials in Westport say at up to 40 people could have been exposed to the virus at a going away party last week. At least 12 have come down with flu-like symptoms. Town schools have been closed. The person who had the virus is now out of the country. As of now, there are no confirmed cases in Westport.
