Deal Reached: New London State Pier To Become Offshore Wind Hub

Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont announced Tuesday an agreement to redevelop the New London State Pier into a wind hub.

He says the harbor plan is a vital piece of the state’s future in wind energy development.

“I wanted to make sure we didn’t just build it so that it would be great for wind power for the next ten years, but that New London was going to be a world-class port for the next 100, and that’s what this pier does.”

Lamont says he wants to make Connecticut into the Saudi Arabia of wind power.

The $157 million plan had been negotiated for 18 months by the Connecticut Port Authority with offshore wind developers Ørsted and Eversource.

But some New London business leaders are unhappy the State Pier will only be used by the wind industry for the next 10 years – to the exclusion of their businesses.
