Schumer Calls For Expanded Testing On Calverton Well Water

U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer is concerned that toxic chemicals could seep into private drinking water wells on Long Island. He wants the Navy to expand testing around a former weapons facility in Calverton.

The Navy released test results that show elevated levels of harmful chemicals like PFAS in some drinking water samples taken near the former Grumman site.

Schumer sent a letter to the Navy. He says more tests need to be done on private drinking water wells –  and quickly.

Schumer’s letter comes after a public meeting last month where residents raised concerns about the safety of their water.

The Navy says there’s no evidence of a chemical plume that would affect private drinking water wells. They plan to conduct more tests in the spring and summer.
