New York Budget Delays Changes To Bail Reform

New York lawmakers are not expected to reexamine a controversial bail reform law until they’re done working on the state budget.

The Albany Times Union reports Democrats who control the state legislature say they will focus on the state budget plan first, which Governor Andrew Cuomo is set to be released Tuesday.

The state faces a $6 billion budget deficit, caused in part by the state Medicaid program.

Spending for public schools is also expected to be a topic of contention again as the state tries to balance the distribution of funds among school districts.

Republicans want to scale back a law that eliminates cash bail for certain misdemeanors and nonviolent felonies. They say it puts possibly dangerous criminals back on the streets.
