The Shinnecock Indian Nation has agreed to allow PSEG Long Island to run a power cable under tribal land that will increase energy reliability to the region.
The project is part of a $500 million South Fork grid upgrade that’s trying to meet a growing demand for energy.
Part of the cable agreement will require PSEG to pay the Shinnecock tribe $500,000 and an option to extend the agreement for 60 years.
Separately, PSEG has also agreed to supply power to the tribal monument billboard in the Hampton Bays that was the site of controversy last year.
The tribe has plans to build another billboard as well as a gas station in the future.
