The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will start taking bids this week for a project to replenish the beach along Dune Road in Hampton Bays. Soil in the area was severely eroded by storms in recent months.
Local and congressional lawmakers pushed for the Army Corps to declare an emergency to get assistance into the area quickly.
Suffolk County has already begun dredging sand to restore the beach, but they have not been able to protect the entire beach.
The Army Corps will dredge nearly 800,000 cubic yards of sand to restore the area.
The federal agency is also set to complete a larger dune restoration project on Fire Island this summer.
