Gillibrand Proposes Caregiver Tax Credit

U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y.

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of New York has introduced legislation to give family caregivers up to $3,000 in tax credits.

The tax break would help family members who take care of a loved one with a medical condition or disability.

Gillibrand says the legislation would pay for out-of-pocket expenses like transportation or home renovations to accommodate the family member.

“When family caregivers take on the expenses associated with the life and well-being of their family members, the expenses can really add up and lead to significant financial stress. Family caregivers deserve to be supported for the extra responsibilities and challenges they take on in the role.”

Gillibrand compares the bill to the child care tax credit. She calls it a “first step” towards compensation for the 2.6 million unpaid caregivers in New York.
