Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim says seniors living in housing complexes have complained of voter intimidation. This comes ahead of the November 5 election, where Ganim faces write-in candidate Marilyn Moore.
Ganim’s campaign shared an elections enforcement complaint against the nonprofit Bridgeport Generation Now. An arm of that organization is backing a lawsuit against Ganim that seeks to overturn the results of the Democratic primary.
Ganim supporters claim the nonprofit is anti-Ganim. The complaint says the group is holding meetings that made some seniors worry they would be doing something illegal if they voted absentee.
“All we do is educate residents on the absentee voting process. The legal and correct way to vote absentee,” said Callie Gale Heilmann, who leads Bridgeport Generation Now.
Heilmann and Ganim agree that residents should have supervised balloting at the complexes, where election officials would help them vote absentee. The lawsuit against Ganim claims campaign workers targeted these residents and solicited absentee applications for the primary.
