Ganim Calls For Supervised Voting In November

Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim

Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim says he plans to write the secretary of the state and request supervised balloting for the November mayoral election.

Ganim’s move comes as his Democratic Primary opponent, Marilyn Moore, announced she’ll run as a write-in candidate. Moore lost to Ganim’s 900 absentee ballots in the primary.

Ganim spoke to WSHU on Thursday.

“I’m calling today and will send a letter to the secretary of the state asking for supervised ballots as we go forward to a November election. I think it’s important for the integrity of the process where it’s appropriate, where discretion can be applied to use the supervised balloting process.”

A spokesperson for the secretary of the state’s office says if supervised balloting is used, only certain absentee ballots could be certified. However, the Bridgeport registrar would be the one to supervise those ballots – not a state-appointed independent monitor.

State lawmakers would have to approve legislation to fund an independent election monitor in order to provide resources for the November election.
