Long Island is carved out into over 100 incorporated villages. They are often run by mayors, have their own laws and are paid for by resident tax dollars. Residents of East Quogue could be next to incorporate.
East Quogue residents could get to vote on village incorporation as soon as October. A community group filed a petition to ask for a vote on incorporation earlier this year to get more control over zoning and construction in the area. The effort failed because the petition listed dead people. A second corrected version of the petition was approved last week. There will be a 30-day wait before a vote can be scheduled to allow for objections and legal challenges.
The last village to incorporate on Long Island was Mastic Beach in 2010. Tax-burdened residents voted to rejoin Brookhaven Town in 2016, becoming the first Long Island village to disband in more than two decades.
