New York Test Scores Up, Boycotts Down

New York education officials say student participation and performance on standardized tests continue to increase statewide.

Students in grades 3 through 8 who took state-run tests last spring scored point-2 percent higher in English and 2.2 percent higher in math.

Less students participated in boycotting standardized tests statewide, but the opt-out movement was the strongest on Long Island.

Opponents say the tests are too long and don’t accurately show student ability. Glitches in computerized testing concerned parents whose children had to retake sections of the exams.

The state’s largest teacher’s union, New York State United Teachers, has renewed calls for the Education Department to fix the exams.
