Firefighters from around the country attended the funeral for Ray Pfeifer in Hicksville on Long Island. Pfeifer was a retired New York City firefighter who became a leading advocate for 9/11 health care.
Pfeifer died on Sunday at the age of 59 after fighting 9/11-related cancer for eight years.
Comedian Jon Stewart recalled senators who tweeted “Never Forget” yet refused to look at Pfeiffer in the eye as the two lobbied for the renewal of the Zadroga Act.
“Make no mistake, Ray Pfeifer died in the line of duty because of illness in the terrible terrorist attacks of 9/11, but more importantly Ray Pfeifer lived in the line of duty.”
Pfeifer dug through the rubble at Ground Zero for eight months after the attack to recover victims.
