Yale University's president has announced several changes in response to concerns that were expressed by students through protests and through meetings with university officials about the racial climate on campus and diversity.
Last night, Peter Salovey said Yale plans to launch a center devoted to race, ethnicity, and other aspects of social identity.
Salovey has proposed creating four new faculty positions dedicated to the histories, lives, and cultures of under-represented communities.
There will also be changes to financial aid policies for low-income students, including a reduction in the amount that students will be expected to contribute.
Also last night, Salovey said in a letter to students that Erika and Nicholas Christakis, who had been criticized for how they handled an email about racially insensitive Halloween costumes, will continue to lead Silliman residential college.
