About Tamsen Williams and the Dying Gaul exhibition: Drawing on years of experience in clothing and fabric design, Tamsen Williams manifests interior structures in mutable textile sculptures. Propelled by coming out of the closet late, she investigates the wounds and joys that form us as people—exposing what is hidden in an attempt to understand it. Her installation reconceptualizes ancient Greek statues of Dying Gauls, remaking the subject in light pink organza and other fabrics, as a woman. By linking to the past, we can illuminate the erasures of the present. Will she be allowed emotions, or will they be revoked with the gender change? Will her nudity be heroic?

Dying Gaul is on view in the Lukacs and Experimental Galleries, in the lower level of Loyola Hall, September 26-October 7, 2022.

This event is organized by Fairfield University’s Visual and Performing Arts Department and is co-sponsored by the Fairfield University Art Museum.
