WSHU Listeners Make a Difference

Thanks to financial support from 18,071 listeners, WSHU finished the 2002-2003 fiscal year with $1,689,840 in membership contributions. That generosity, along with support from underwriters, institutions, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, made what we do possible.

As costs continued to increase, the added membership money allowed WSHU to nearly keep pace; WSHU closed Fiscal Year 2003 with an operating deficit of $124,837.

WSHU is grateful for your support, and looks forward to a successful year of quality public radio programs for the Connecticut and Long Island area.

As Noted in the following financial statements, WSHU booked in-kind income of $250,591 from Sacred Heart University. This value was derived from formulas provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and itemizes a share of security, maintenance, and administrative cost of the University less the payments WSHU makes to Sacred Heart University. In addition, we booked $20,380 of donated products and services, most of which are tickets, CD, and books used as premiums (thank-you gifts) for membership drives. The following charts show income and expenses net of these in-kind items.

It’s all About the Programs You Enjoy

WSHU works very hard to serve our listeners well and to be your favorite radio station. During the 2002-2003 fiscal year, WSHU was pleased to:

1.    add “Hear and Now” to our schedule to replace “Public Interest”; and add “Selected Shorts” to Saturday afternoons. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, and we’ve received many listener comments.

2.    increase the number of live performances of Folk Music on “Profiles in Folk”.

3.    celebrate the 30th anniversary of “Profiles in Folk; and the 20th anniversary of WSHU’s membership in NPR.

Our goal is to be your favorite radio station and that of your 200,000 neighbors who tune in at least once each week. Thanks very much for being a loyal WSHU listener, and for being supportive of our efforts to serve you better.
